Where the Good Guys Meet...The Engine House
Historic reverence hits me when I turn east off Groesbeck Highway onto Cass Avenue toward downtown Mount Clemens and see the exterior of The Engine House, a painstakingly renovated building with over one hundred thirty five years of serving drinks and entertainment in her past. Today, she shines in the summer sun, her front face now adorned with authentic fire house doors painted enamel red, all turned out in glossy black & white trim. This old beauty displays a powerful shield shaped emblem, which is her logo, painted atop her giant satellite dish. Her logo’s image embodies the badge of strength that each of her firefighter owners proudly has worn.
Detroit firefighters John Gusumano, Greg Sisoy, Brian Crowder and Executive Chef Dennis Capozzoli appropriately named the place, The Engine House, to pay homage to all firefighters and to invite patrons into a space which gives them a chance to share in the camaraderie, found only in the hearts of those that risk their lives daily, protecting and serving the public. While these guys are busy preserving a true historic gem in the Eastside’s county seat, they’re also quickly building a business on a foundation of warmth and energy that’s radiating far past the borders of Macomb County. On a recent Wednesday, which is Firefighter’s Day, while dining, I spoke with several firefighters who were in town from Port Huron to do a training session at Macomb Community College. These guys made a point of making a deliberate detour to enjoy The Engine House, her food and her people.
I recommend you try spending a little time amongst the good guys, while dining and sharing stories or watching a game on any one of the ten flat screen televisions. You’ll feel at home, like you’re back in your old neighborhood. Most think of this place as a bar and grill, but are shocked to find a far more expansive menu, offering culinary surprises such as frutta del mare - an amazing seafood pasta comprised of mussels and an amazing array of fish and herbs, guaranteed to impress the most avid of seafood lovers. There’s also the “House Special” -- The Engine House’s Fabulous BBQ Ribs. These ribs are beyond tender, falling off their juicy rack and arriving to your table basted in the chef’s homemade barbeque sauce, which has a tang to it that is guaranteed to add more saliva to your mouth than you thought humanly possible!
Recently, Executive Chef Dennis Capozzoli won the Macomb County Rotary Club’s prestigious President’s Award at the Spring Zing Taste of Macomb Event hosted by Zuccaro’s Banquet & Catering Center. Over nineteen Macomb County restaurants competed for this coveted award. Chef Dennis shared, in his usual humble manner, that he was caught completely off guard when host Mark Zuccaro, called him on stage at the end of the evening’s awards banquet to present him with the highest honor of the evening. He added, “It just felt really good to receive such a huge award for one of my own dishes. Knowing that my dish was judged above other restaurants that I know are not just established but that are top notch places…It was just very cool!” Let this new President’s Award back up our review of The Engine House’s menu.
